Designing Compelling Medical Games” is a workshop about the design process. Think of a “cooking school” where the secrets behind each dish (the game) are learned, versus a “cooking class” where the chef demonstrates how to prepare the dish. We will focus on the “why” more than the “how”, a nd participants will have the opportunity to experiment as they create their own compelling game!

Speaker Profile

Byron Reeves

Professor Byron Reeves is the Director of the Center for the Study of Language and Information, and Co-founder and faculty director of the Stanford Media X Program.  He is an expert on the psychological processing of media in the areas of attention, emotions, learning, and physiological responses, author of The Media Equation:  Hoe People Respond to Computer, Television and New Media Like Real People and Places (with Prof. Cliff Nass, Cambridge University Press), and author of several studies about responses to immersive features of media.  His research has been the basis for a number of new media products for companies such as Microsoft, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard, in the areas of voice interfaces, automated dialogue systems and conversational agents. He is currently working on applications of multi-player games to the conduct of serious work.
